I special-ordered this Charger in a seldom seen combination of GY9 Dark Gold Metallic paint with E6Y3 Light Tan vinyl bucket seats from Hanover Motors Inc in Hackettstown, NJ on October 5, 1971 and took delivery on November 20, 1971. According to the "A28" code on the fender tag and broadcast sheet, this Charger had a scheduled production date of October 28, 1971 at the Lynch Road, Michigan assembly plant. I have all the supporting original owner documentation including sales paperwork, build sheet, MSRP window sticker, original NJ registration/tag, and owners manual packet. The $67.55 optional Rallye Package, of which only 3,891 Chargers were optioned with, consisted of a dark argent painted grille, power bulge hood w/ black performance treatment, simulated door louvers, louvered tail lights, rallye instrument cluster, F70x14 wsw tires, and front and rear sway bars. Considering the rare color combination and the unique list of options, this Charger Rallye could very well be 1-of-1 produced in this particular configuration.
From November 1971 to November 1978, this Charger served as my faithful drive-to-work vehicle on Mondays through Fridays and my trophy-chasing drag racer on weekends. Its most highlighted claim to fame came at the NHRA Summernationals in Englishtown, NJ where it won the D/SA class trophy in 1972 and the J/SA class trophy in 1973. In November 1978, with just over 113k miles on the odometer, the Charger was retired from daily driver duties and replaced with a new 1978 Dodge Magnum GT. The Charger still saw occasional weekend racing action but it was mainly my vehicle of choice during weekend cruise nights thereafter. In 1987, with approximately 120k miles showing on the odometer, I finally decided to have the engine overhauled and the transmission upgraded. With a few performance modifications like a set of Racing Head Service cylinder heads, a Sig Erson mild street/strip hydraulic camshaft, Hooker high-flow 1-5/8" tube exhaust headers with Magna-Flow low-restriction mufflers, a Turbo-Action street/strip torque converter along with a reverse pattern manual shift valve body for the transmission, and a set of Weld light-weight aluminum drag racing wheels for the front and rear, the Charger was once again chasing trophies at the local bracket races. It was last raced in May 2008 at the 2-day All Mopar Southern Nationals in Valdosta, Georgia where it garnered the Street Class win on Day 1 and runner-up position on Day 2 of the event. Today the Charger remains tagged, insured, and completely street legal, but is rarely driven. Due to its non-use, the transmission"s front seal leaks fluid and will need to be replaced. It still dons its factory-applied paint (except for the front clip) and still has its complete factory-installed interior. It also retains its numbers matching 340 engine block #MH340 37350070 signifying it as the 70th engine assembled on October 19, 1971 at the Mound Road, Michigan engine plant, along with the factory stock cast iron intake manifold, Carter Thermo-Quad 4 barrel carburetor, and electronic distributor that it was built with. The previously removed factory stock cast iron exhaust manifolds, windshield washer reservoir, dog dish hubcaps, and front sway bar, go with the car along with the original after-market Keystone Klassic mag wheels circa 1972 shown in the Summernationals winners circle photos.
