Here we have something truly unique in the form of this 2003 Aston Martin V12 Vanquish “Convertible”. Aston Martin produced the first generation V12 Vanquish from 2001 to 2007. Designed by Ian Callum, the V12 Vanquish was the larger, more powerful and more expensive grand touring option over the DB7. Its most direct competitor at the time was the Ferrari 550 Maranello. Like the Maranello, the Vanquish is a front engine V12 coupe with two seats. Also like the Maranello, Aston Martin never made a production convertible.
Then in 2004, famed Italian design house Zagato created a one off Vanquish V12 prototype Convertible for the Geneva Auto Show. It was right hand drive and featured a hard boot cover (Last Picture). Despite numerous order requests to Zagato, Aston Martin had too many other projects in the works to consider an open Vanquish. Unfazed, Zagato chose to continue to showcase the car and it was imported to America to be displayed on the upper lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d"Elegance in 2004. It was there that the former owner fell in love with the car and through extended negotiations was able to acquire it for an undisclosed sum. (It was later sold at Bonhams 2015 Auction with 13k miles for $660,000.)
Enter MLB Hall of Fame Pitcher who saw the concept in 2004 and contacted Aston Martin about availability. Upon learning that a production version was not planned, world renowned Newport Convertible Engineering was commissioned to create a convertible version of his own personal Vanquish V12 Coupe using the Zagato concept as a guide.
It was fitted with a power soft top and custom leather boot cover. The build took several months and cost upward of $100k. Red Perforated leather inserts were installed in the seats and door inserts. Aside from the addition of a modern sound system (original components pictured), the rest of the vehicle is stock. The vehicle has been dealer maintained since Day One and needs nothing.
Having had much personal experience with both factory spec Vanquish V12s and this particular example, I can whole heartedly attest to the following quote made by automotive journalist Winston Goodfellow upon his experience behind the wheel of the factory prototype:
Without the roof you hear the exhaust burble at idle, a marvelous impersonation of a Riva motorboat waiting at the dock." then, "in less than a mile it is obvious a topless Vanquish is a surreal, ethereal experience" and "More intoxicating is the V12"s song. Hidden at low speeds by that lovely exhaust, the engine emits a fabulous muscular deep growl that fills the cockpit in a way Vanquish coupe owners can dream about". He concludes with two sentiments, one of disappointment that after his drive a conversation with Aston"s CEO confirmed that they had too much on their plate for the Zagato Vanquish to enter production, but more positively "I"ve always been a huge fan of the Vanquish, and Zagato"s Roadster takes it to another level".
Well said Mr. Goodfellow……Well said indeed.
