Vehicle description
If you find a lower-mileage VW van, buy it. 2002 Eurovan GLS with 72,800 miles. I purchased in fall 2012 with 40,000 miles. Before buying I got the Carfax, along with receipts, and the mileage checked out. I’ve put 4-5k/yr on it in the nearly 7 yrs I’ve had it. Vast majority have been highway miles—hockey trips, ski trips, vacations up north. With family getting older, no longer have as much need for it. Just returned from its final trip up north. Performed perfectly, as always. Sorry to sell but need space in the driveway. I’m the third owner. Was delivered to VW of America originally (as fleet vehicle, I believe) and then sold to an owner in southwest Michigan who drove it rarely. I then bought it from a dealer just across the state line in northern Indiana. All service since I’ve owned it done at John & Holger and Shores Car Care. J&H handles only German makes; SCC are VW experts. Work in the last two years alone: compete brake rebuild ($1800), new starter, new battery, new front and rear shocks, new cabin air filter, new alternator drive belt. Have receipts. Across 30k+ miles over 7 years, it’s never once had an issue. As solid in winter blizzards as summer heat and storms. Works just fine for city driving—gets lots of waves—but absolutely unbeatable as a highway vehicle. Nothing compares. Doesn’t leak anything, doesn’t burn anything. Minor issues: the radio antenna is broken (if there’s anyone who still listens to the radio). The speaker covers in the lower parts of the two front doors are cracked. The check engine light goes on and off. I drive two other VWs of same era and both have had same light on continually for tens of thousands of miles. No performance effect at all. ABS light sometimes comes on. Related to issue with wheel speed sensor. Apparently an approx. $400 fix, but part is hard to find. Has not bothered me enough to pursue. When ABS light goes off, the brakes will make a slight “boing” sound at very low speeds. Again, no performance effect at all. The brakes work perfectly. All in all, simply an incredible vehicle. For those priced out of the camper versions ($30-50k) and the new, forthcoming electric VW Microbus (projected at $40k) but who want an economical, reliable intro to “van life,” here’s your VW. A van in this condition, with this few miles, is not likely to go down in value. Still plenty of time left in summer for more road trips….
