The R129 was a solid example of Mercedes Benz at it"s peak of engineering excellence and innovation. Mercedes built on their already stellar reputation for rock solid, ultra-safe cars, and it shows to great effect in the SL. The car is a somewhat less basic than the previous R107, offering soft surfaces and comfort features ranging from automatic climate control to power seats, windows, and locks. The convertible top raises and stows itself with the touch of a button. The soft top on this one is in excellent condition, and the car includes a matching black hardtop that gives the SL a solid, purposeful look. The 3.0 liter DOHC inline-6 delivers 228 horsepower and a seamless flow of torque, which makes it feel like the car could accelerate forever. It also has a brisk 6-cylinder warble that recalls great SLs of the past which were all powered by six cylinders. You will never get tired of a quick downshift in the 5-speed automatic gearbox, which really makes the most of the engine"s power. Regardless of which gear you"re in, throttle response is crisp. The car feels elemental and connected to the road. Still a top choice among enthusiasts who appreciate quality and performance, this 300SL still feels like the flagship German machine it was in 1991. This vehicle has always been located in warm and dry climates. It was purchased new in Southern California then moved to Phoenix, therefore it has no evidence of rust or corrosion. The black leather seats are in good shape with minimal wear and haven"t been cooked by the sun. It received new brakes, fuel line and the cooling system was flushed in 2017. It runs great and has been an awesome weekend driver. We are selling it because we are buying an all wheel drive vehicle due to relocation where it often snows.
It is in excellent condition for it"s age, yet the new owner should understand that it is 27 years old, and therefore has no warranties expressed or implied. The vehicle has a few minor issues that we are aware of: -The bottom of the driver"s power seat does not move forward or backward. It can be moved manually by removing the seat cushion and manually moving the gears. We set it right in the middle so both my wife (she is 5"4") and I (I"m 6") can comfortably drive it by adjusting only the back rest. -The driver"s side automatic door lock becomes intermittently stuck and needs repair. -The power radio antenna does not go up or down. We use the AUX input rather than listen to the radio, so we never replaced it. -There are a few very minor dings which have been shown in the listing photos. -Some cracks in wood grain trim around the gearshift lever. -Latch for center console needs replacement/repair. -Center console leather has cracks
