HISTORY OF THE PORSCHE 944 The Porsche 944 was introduced to the market in 1982 and was based on Porsches successful 924 platform which featured a front engine and rear wheel drive layout. Porsche mounted the transaxle in the rear, providing a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution which made 944 one of the best handling cars of its era. The four cylinder engine featured revolutionary counter rotating balance shafts that gave the engine the smoothness of a six cylinder. 1989 saw the introduction of the 944 S2 powered by an enhanced 3.0 liter 16-valve engine with dual overhead camshafts that produced over 200hp. 0-60 time was under 7 seconds and top speed was in excess of 150mph. The S2 was the first 944 to offer a cabriolet with special body work constructed in Weinsberg, Germany. These exclusive models were produced in limited numbers and cost nearly $49,000 when new.
