The Fiat 124 Spider was originally styled by Tom Tjaarda during his tenure at Pininfarina, and was gradually updated with larger bumpers and side markers over its long production run. This 1981 Fiat 124 Spider Turbo is a rare Turbo model, one of 700 built for the US market via a partnership between Fiat USA and an outside supplier, East Coast-based Legend Industries. The twin-cam Fiat inline-four is fitted with a turbo setup from Legend Engineering which provides 6 psi of boost. Naturally aspirated Spiders were originally rated at 102 horsepower and 110 lb-ft of torque, and the turbocharged models increased output to 120 horsepower and 130 lb-ft when new. The engine is backed by a 5-speed manual transmission, which shifts smoothly with a strong clutch. This example shows only ~25k original miles on the odometer. $2700 more expensive than a standard Spider when new, Legend Engineering’s system included unique manifolds and a Mitsubishi turbocharger providing 6 psi of boost. Power was rated at 120 HP, which should be good for a respectable eight second to 60 MPH run.
