Vehicle description
This classic car is a perfect daily driver for a VW enthusiast! After 29 years of owning this fabulous car, I am with resistance ready to part ways.
This 1979 VW Convertible Superbeetle has fuel injection and was the "champagne edition" (all white interior, exterior and top) manufactured the last year they made these cars. The "used" black top was put on in 2011 when the car was painted and had body work done on the rear where the roof attaches. Purchased from the original owner in 1989, I have all maintenance records from 1979 to present, along with two maintenance manuals (VW and "For Dummies") and a relatively new car cover. Unfortunately, the boot cover and original front license plate were stolen. Body in good condition with little rust except for bottom pan (rusted through; rails in good shape), a few spots on body, rear grill. Paint chipped by gas tank, cracking on hood and rear wheel well. Needs some TLC or parts replacement: Original radio does not work, shifting diagram missing from dashboard, cracks on dashboard vinyl, sun visor holders broken, right door lock knob missing, plastic window crank handles, fiber carpeting in back was removed, convertible top liner sagging, speedometer makes spinning noise.
Mechanically good with significant work done the past couple years:
Odometer: 90,970 miles (actual 190K); ~30,000 on rebuilt engine (rebuilt at 160,928)
New suspension - rack & pinion, tie rods, struts, etc. - August 2010
New Fuel Pump Relay - March 2015
All new air hoses and fuel lines - May 2015
New battery - Feb 2016
Rebuilt Mass Air Flow Meter - April 2016
New alternator - April 2016
New brakes/master cylinder - April 2017
New tires - April 2017 (purchased at Discount Tires with warranty and service)
New fan - August 2017 New CV Boot and joints, f ront suspension control arm bushing, muffler and tailpipe - November 2017
Passed CA smog April 2016 (rebuilt Air Flow meter); failed CA smog 2018. As time goes by, it is more difficult to pass smog in CA - in past 10 years, I usually need to do adjustments or replace parts. It recently failed CO levels, but other measurements were passing. Unfortunately, the cut off for exemption in CA is 1975 and my car is 1979. Thus, I prefer to sell outside of the state as I am not a mechanic, this is costly and CA smog requirements will not ease in near future. If you live in CA and want to buy the car, I am selling it AS IS and smog repair would be your responsibility. The car runs well. I am happy to discuss the history of the car and provide records. My car has been serviced by good VW mechanics over the years. I am selling the car AS IS and buyer is responsible for shipping costs. I know it will bring much joy to someone else as it has to me!
