Vehicle description

ALL ELECTRIC CONVERSION 1974 SUPER BEETLE CLASSIC
P rofessionally converted and restored 2007-2008.
Handles great. Low-maintenance. Super quiet. Very reliable. Flip the switch and go, even in winter.
Drive by the gas station and smile. Fill up the "tank" for about $1.
Great car for running errands, picking up groceries, going for short drives or hikes, country back roads, or teenager.
RANGE: 15-20 miles per charge. Plugs in to standard 110 home outlet. No special charging equipment.
Recent updates 2020: New 12V battery (powers lights and turns on car) New electric cable for motor that had become frayed New floor mats front and back New VW shift knob New 5W 12v solar trickle charger New 12v charging station so you can charge a phone or bluetooth speakers New seat covers (doggie side is slightly dirty but wipes clean with some vinegar water spray) New chrome headlight rings New padded real leather steering wheel cover New interior door handles Two extra tires a guy gave me that happened to notice the car! New interior door panels (one got a little warped but not bad, due to rain that came right after I installed them. It probably needs to be attached a little better, but it"s nothing serious). Previous updates: New set of nine 8V batteries around 2016 Rebuilt front bucket seats. I have the seat covers so I can bring my dog. The seats look brand new and are very comfortable. Rear seat is original. I fold it down and cover with a blanket. I use back seat for carrying groceries or put the dog back there if I have a passenger. Electric Motor is "Advanced Motors & Drives 203-06-4001"
4 gears on the floor manual stick. The clutch is no longer necessary.
I take good care of the batteries with charging and keeping the distilled water levels to the top.
I replaced the original set of batteries with brand new ones (nine 8-volts) in 2016. They should easily last another 4 years if well maintained. I keep them charged up.
My solar guy set me up with an easy pump system to fill the distilled water, which comes with the vehicle.
Built in volt meter (see pic) so you can see when charge is getting low (want to keep above 60v).
I calculated the gas mileage equivalent and I estimated 50 or 60 mpg.
Full charge in 5-8 hours. Plug in at night (standard 110 outlet) and charged by morning.
Separate 12v battery is needed for lights and for turning on the car, brand new this summer.
I installed a 5W solar trickle charger for the 12V battery.
12v is charged during charging of the main batteries. Solar trickle charger acts as a backup.
Brakes inspected this summer. They said only 50% worn and should be good for several more years. They can squeak a little on occasion, but not bad.
I took it up some steep hills outside of town to go for a hike. Coming back down the brakes did well but they did smoke!
I got the urge to spray paint it camo (with Rustoleum) this last summer because of a small touch of rust along the bottom. Most people seem to think the camo is pretty cool. Kids love it.
Other comments: Small dent in rear left fender and driver door. Barely noticeable with the recent paint job. Small hole in floor on drivers side. This could be covered with a plate or something. I don"t notice it much since it"s covered with floor mats. Sunroof: I don"t mess with it. I have never opened it all the way. I"m guessing the cables inside are original and so probably worn. I"m afraid if I open it all the way it might not close. I found some videos on youtube that showed how to fix it and someone probably could get it working again that knows what they"re doing. Odometer and speedometer do not work. The odometer is stuck at 86225. I have put maybe 20000 over the 13 years I"ve owned it. I only put about 5 miles per day on average. No heater. I find I don"t need it as long as I"m bundled up. No radio. I use Bluetooth battery powered speakers and my phone with Spotify to listen to music, which works great.
It gets a TON of attention. There are a lot of bug fans out there, I found out
I just had two people today comment on how they owned a VW. People take it"s picture quite often, and they stare at it because it"s so quiet!
It"s been a lot of fun. Now I"m moving and can"t take it with me.
You can be greener than everyone on the block!
