1973 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class 450SL Roadster in used condition. This car was in storage for a long period of time before I acquired it in May of 2019. The car shows low mileage (60,990), and great colors!
Exterior Paint looks very good, and body panels are relatively straight. Paint color code is DB-906 - Gray Blue Poly. Both doors have to be closed semi-hard to fit right. There is corrosion and paint bubbling on the RR quarter panel, RH door (at top of side molding), LF fender (on the top), and LR quarter panel. Hardtop is nice with minor bubbling on one corner and a dent/gouge on the top. Convertible top frame, blue fabric and rear plastic windows look excellent! All glass is good. Optional front headlamp washers are mounted on front bumper! All four (4) Bundt rims have been restored, with new Cooper Evolution 195/70R14 radial tires. Trunk floor looks solid. Spare tire and jack are present, but there is no tool kit. Drivers side floor pans have been replaced (looks like galvanized sheet metal from underneath the car, but my under car pictures came out terrible). All all other floor pans appear to be factory. Someone has added a third stop light on top of the trunk lid; no idea why.
Engine 4.5L V-8 engine with automatic transmission runs good once warmed up. New Die Hard battery installed last year. Exhaust sounds fine with no leaks.
Interior Interior looks fabulous in blue and is mostly new - seat covers, carpet and door panels. All gauges work except the odometer. Becker radio has been replaced with a Sony unit, with a removable face plate. The clear plastic gauge face has a small crack at the bottom.
Overview I think this car is gorgeous! I"ve owned the car for two years, and have put maybe 100 miles on it. I never drive it. Before I bought the car, my understanding was it was in storage for many years. The car is starting to show paint bubbles and minor corrosion, especially on both rear wheel well openings. Underneath the car looks very good, except for the replacement floor pans on the drivers side (as previously noted). The car has a few mechanical issues that should be corrected before driving: 1) gas line running from gas tank down to the fuel pump assembly is leaking (steady drip). I believe it"s MB part #116-470-15 75, which I have (and goes with the car), but can"t get the old one off. I can get a 19mm wrench on it at the gas tank, but can"t get enough "umph" on it to get it off! 2) a brake line/master cylinder is leaking under the firewall on the drivers side. Not sure exactly what"s leaking, but it"s causing a small puddle to form over time. I assume it"s brake fluid, as the rear brake reservoir is extremely low. 3) Power side windows aren"t working; neither side will go down. 4) Car starts easier with starting fluid. When the car was given ample time to warm up, it ran great. Now with the fuel leak, letting the car "warm up" isn"t smart!
Final Thoughts Clear Ohio title in my name. Car is presently registered, on the road and insured. I think my reserve is reasonable. Buyer is responsible for picking up/shipping the car, but I will assist in any way possible. Personal inspections of the car are both welcomed and encouraged. I have receipts going back to about 2009; mainly for the interior restoration parts and labor. Dead presidents on pick up is my favorite method of payment. Holler if any questions.
