Selling my 1973 Buick LeSabre Custom.
4 years ago, I bought this car from the daughter of the original owner. It was originally purchased in Rexburg, Idaho in the Spring of 1973. It was always garaged kept until he died in 2010. His daughter inherited the car and held onto it until 2015 when I purchased it. I was told that at some time in the 1980"s the original 350 4bbl motor suffered a cracked block from water in the engine (bad gas). It was replaced with a 455. It has a Rochester carb that appears to be original but I cannot be certain. I don"t know if the 455 motor (which was an option in 1973) used the same carb as the 350. The ignition system is a coil design from the 1980"s as well, so there are no points anymore. This car originally came with a vinyl top, but like so many of them, it wore/rusted out and was replaced with a hardtop and painted bright white. It looks 10 times better with this top than a vinyl one if you ask me. This is the more uncommon, pillar-less 2 door with Buick rally wheels rather than the plain-jane 4 door hub-capped version that is often seen (when you see an old LeSabre at all!) It really is a head turner. If it didn"t have LeSabre emblems most would not even know what this cool looking boat is. The green metallic paint is in very good condition with typical rock chips a light scratch here and there. There are no dents and the body is straight. The interior has green cloth seats that are in very good condition as well. There is sun fading in places and the passenger front seat has a rip in the vinyl on the side (see photo). An upholsterer could replace just that one piece of vinyl if desired. The dash has the usual cracks of GM cars from the 70"s. It has an aftermarket radio.
Mechanically, the cars starts, runs, and drives well. The carb was rebuilt last summer and it also received a new distributor and coil around the same time. I use ethanol-free 87 octane gas and it runs fine with it. There is a little bit of fluid seepage around the valve covers and transmission pan (just need gaskets). No major leaks. It sits most of the winter and there are never any puddles under it, just an oily damp spot or two. It burns no oil either. Exhaust blows clear.
A couple items that I planned on replacing this summer were the front brake pads and rotors and the fuel tank as it has a pin hole leak at the seam half way up. Drips gas when it sloshes around when driving. Doesn"t cost too much to replace the tank. I think they are like $100 for a new one. Other than that, the car doesn"t need anything mechanically. Other things about the car: -Has a custom dual exhaust set-up with the tail pipes exiting downward under the car about 2/3rds back. One of the manifolds has a slight exhaust leak but nothing real annoying.
-Has some paint bubbling around driver quarter panel (wheel well) edge. Other than that it is pretty much a rust free car. Underbody is nice and clean. -Tires are good with over half tread life remaining. Car comes with two extra Buick rally wheels that have ancient snow tires on them. -Air conditioning is inoperable and the compressor belt is removed. -Has an engine block heater but I don"t know if it works. -The weather striping has seen better days. When washing the car I am careful not to spray too hard around the window seals. The windshield might need to be resealed as it gets a drop or two of water thru the top of it as well when washed. -The fuel gauge works when it wants. Maybe 50% of the time. I believe the 88,885 miles that the odometer states to be accurate (except for the engine of course) but have no smoking gun to prove it. It is based solely on what the original owner"s daughter has told me. Since 2010 there has been less than 1,000 miles put on the car. I had no plans on selling this car until recently when the Corvette of dreams came up for sale. So unfortunately, this has to go. It has been so much fun to put my kids in the back and go floating down the street in this thing. I tell people it"s like driving a waterbed. But, it is a bit of a wolf in sheep"s clothing as the torque of the 455 will light the tires up for blocks (open rear end of course) if you lay in on it. An all around fun car.
This car is being sold as-is by me, the owner. There is no warranty expressed or implied. Sale will be final. I tried to be as accurate as possible in this listing and in my descriptions and I strongly encourage you to come see the car in person. If you cannot, I am happy to supply more pics/videos. Please remember that this car is 46 years old and will not behave like a new vehicle. Feel free to call Tom at with any questions.
