Vehicle description
This is one man"s mission and a story of perseverance without compromise. Built with perseverance and immense attention to detail and accuracy over the course of 8 years, this is the result of one man"s mission. Constructed in the same manner as was originally employed; a hand rolled aluminium body crafted over a wooden buck and a tubular space frame chassis. Where would one even start in creating something similar? Obtaining the permission to 3D scan, record and measure all dimensions of what is understood to be the most original of all RSK would be difficult. Finding the time, the skills and the budget required would be further challenges. This work of art appears authentic to the original it was scanned from, other than lacking over 50 years of patina. The patina will be the responsibility of the new owner. This car would be welcomed and admired at many events Worldwide. It is reliable, durable and ready for an adventure. It"s a fabulous opportunity to experience and enjoy much of the thrill of an original RSK whilst avoiding the 3+ million USD price tag of one of those 34 cars built between 1957 and 1962.
Although it is undeniably a piece of automotive art, you can climb in, slide yourself into the leather seat, turn the key, engage the ignition switch to the right, the fuel pump beside it and start it up. Pull the dogleg gearshift left and back, let out the clutch and the excitement begins. It"s not quiet and its very light (circa 600kg), so the flat four fires it along with real verve. The steering is precise, the disc brakes firm and the whole experience feels very alive. Add a helmet and goggles and you could be at Sebring or Le Mans in 1959. We took it to Goodwood for Octane magazine where it circulated hour after hour without complaint. Of course it can never be called "original", however it is indeed an original . There is not another one the same. Modern techniques, materials and accuracy bring benefits that an original built over 50 years ago could not employ.
The CDS tubular frame has thicker wall tubing and is TIG welded rather than brazed, the front body has slightly thicker 1.5mm aluminium for a little added durability. The motor is based on a modified 2.0 Porsche 914 flat four producing 130 hp and has a broad torque curve. It has CSP upright cooling, a dry sump oil system, twin Dellorto 40 carbs, performance camshaft, and lightened crank. Transmission is a Porsche 901 5 speed with a 911 clutch and the exhaust system is stainless steel. The suspension and brakes feature the later double wishbone front and rear with rod end bearings for accurate geometry, front and adjustable rear anti roll bars (sway bars) and Pro Tech adjustable coil over dampers. The fit and finish is something to be savoured, beautiful silver paint and red leather. A couple of stone chips provide proof that this machine can be used and enjoyed, it has covered a few thousand miles since birth. We hope that the buyer will add a few more miles and make more memories; take it to events, let it be seen and enjoyed rather than left on display as another priceless exhibit. Available for a price similar to a nice 356 and less than the cost, if at all possible, of commissioning a copy. We can ship Worldwide.
