Vehicle description
You are bidding on a completely original, one owner 1970 Pontiac Firebird Formula 400. I am a private collector, not a flipper, dealer or middleman. I own several fully restored Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles, Chevys and Buicks. Originality and original parts are very important to me and my standards are very high. I purchased this car from the original owner in Northern California this past November. I had been searching for a 1970 Formula 400 for over seven years- the vast majority of them have been cut up, modified, driven into the ground or allowed to rust away. This car was exactly what I was looking for- all original with 62,xxx miles, all matching numbers drivetrain (engine, transmission, 12 bolt rear end) as well as all original paint, all original perfect trim, original glass and a nearly new original interior. This car has never been in an accident, never been repainted- purchased from the original owner who is now in his late 80s and was an Engineering professor at Stanford for 40+ years.
Exterior: All original paint, zero rust, dry California car that has never left the state and always garaged. Every bit of original trim is with the car. . I have spent thousands of hours hunting down OEM and NOS parts for my cars and know how difficult they are to find, and how expensive good pieces are once you find them. The original steel hood even has the numbering from the factory. The OEM front windshield has a crack in it, but all the rest of the glass is great. Original owner swapped out the factory wheels with Chevy Rally Wheels at the dealership when he picked up the car. Car has great patina, bumpers are in fantastic shape- you just never see a 70 Formula in this original condition.
Interior: The best original interior I have ever seen. Dash and gauges are flawless, console, seats, door panels all look like new. Small one inch separation on drivers seat at seam, but can easily be fixed. Only thing that would need to be replaced is the headliner, as the material has just become thin and weak with age. Original carpet was protected with heavy floor mats. Factory AC car and even has period correct, dealer installed 8-Track player.
Drivetrain: Original 400 motor with every original piece still on it from air cleaner to California emissions equipment, engine bay stickers, factory pen markings, etc. (Only exception is the intake manifold which the original owner had replaced with an Edelbrock Performer Intake at some point). I had my restoration shop evaluate the health of the engine and it has excellent, consistent compression in all eight cylinders. Runs strong, shifts smooth, stops on a dime. All it would need is a tune up and you could probably cruise it anywhere. Power steering, power disc brakes, dual exhaust, only year for the heavy duty 12 bolt pos rear end.
I"m selling the car because I just found out that my wife and I are having another child and I really need to finish the restoration of my 1970 Buick GSX. Given the circumstances in my life right now, it would probably be at least 2 years before I could start on this Firebird. I have very high standards when it comes to classic cars and there will be no disappointments with this Formula. Anyone who knows what they"re looking at will understand why it took me 7 years to find this car. Asking a very fair price, but don"t need to sell and won"t listen to any low ball offers. Car is available for inspection and is located at my warehouse in Costa Mesa, California. I encourage any potential buyer to come look at the car in person. I will be happy to answer any questions. My name is Clay and my cell is 9four9two3three4six7seven.
I will be advertising this car for sale locally and reserve the right to end the auction at any time. Thanks!
