Vehicle description

Before I begin to talk about this Duetto, you should know that the Chassis (Unibody) of a Duetto is identical to the Series 1 (Gen-1) Spider, with only a few differences. In other words, a Spider (1971 to 1974) could be used as a "donor" with the addition of these parts:
* Nose Repair Section * Lower Front Valance * Rear Quarter Panels
Also, these modifications will be needed:
* Wind Shield * Dash Mounts * Small Section in the Rear (the Alfa Romeo mechanic knows)

I was told by an Alfa Romeo mechanic (a long-time "professional" from Italy) that a "donor" chassis after 1974 could not be used, because there were a lot of subtle changes, in addition to the rear mounted battery.
Also, it is my understanding that the complete "Fire Wall" must be moved over to the "donor" chassis.
With the addition of these parts, and the proper modifications to a "donor" chassis, the specifications would then be 100% EXACTLY the SAME as a 1969 Alfa Romeo Duetto!
The most important point to keep in mind is that this Duetto will be sold with a "clean" California registration for a 1969 Alfa Romeo (Duetto) Spider!
So, here is the description:
I purchased this Spider / Duetto in 2017, with plans to completely "strip" the car down to a "Shell" and then do a full (nut & bolt) restoration. However, I"m dealing with some pressing financial constraints, and I"m just not in a position to complete my dream. The end result is that my loss could be your gain.
For those of you who are not familiar with this particular 1969 Spider, here are a few key points:
The term "Duetto" is a nickname for the (Boat Tail) Spiders, which were made from 1966 to 1969, and was featured in the "Graduate" (1967) movie, starring Dustin Hoffman.
The 1969 "Duetto" is the last and the best of the "Duetto"s" because it had some (Brakes, Ash Tray Console, etc.) improvements, which were not available in previous years.
In 1969 there was a HUGE Labor Strike in Italy, and many factories didn"t produce anything. As a result, Alfa Romeo only manufactured 2,500 of these Spiders / Duetto"s in 1969.
So, this Duetto was involved in a "Roll-Over" crash, and had been sitting in the New Mexico Desert for over 2 Decades. I"m assuming that the driver perished in the crash, because the keys were still in the ignition (in the "on" position) when the previous Seller found it. I subsequently purchased it directly from him.
Here is some "Good News" about this Duetto:
* The "IMPACT POINT" MISSED the ENGINE, and hit the "A-Arm" directly! * The FRAME is "Basically" STRAIGHT! * For the most part, this is a "RUST-FREE" (New Mexico) CAR! * Pertaining to major components, this is a COMPLETE CAR!
Unfortunately, the Hood was thrown out by mistake, along with some scrap metal. However, to find a replacement Hood should be easy because ALL YEARS of the Spiders (and Duetto"s) have basically the same Hood.
As soon as this Duetto was transported to California, I had it "verified" by the CHP, and then I received a "clean" California title from DMV.
Luckily, a few months later, I was able to acquire a COMPLETE FRONT CLIP, from a 1971 Spider, which is EXACTLY the SAME as the 1969 Spider / Duetto, with the exception of the 2 parts I referenced above.
This FRONT CLIP would be very valuable in the restoration of this Duetto, simply because you cannot purchase the replacement Sheet Metal Panels, inside the Engine Compartment.
Pertaining to the Doors, its probably cheaper to just purchase replacements, since they"re available (last time I checked) on eBay.
Finally, I will share what I believe to be the "optimal strategy" for a "complete restoration" (and maximum profit) for this Duetto.
In my opinion, the SINGLE MOST VALUABLE "TOOL" to SELL a CLASSIC CAR for "TOP DOLLAR" is to FIRST SHOW the BUYER a PICTURE of a PERFECTLY "RESTORED" (and BEAUTIFULLY PAINTED) SHELL, and then SHOW PICTURES of the VARIOUS "STAGES" of the ENTIRE (NUT & BOLT) BUILD PROCESS!
Here is a 1969 Duetto, which SOLD for $121K, in 2013:

Basically, if this Duetto is COMPLETELY "STRIPPED" and then METICULOUSLY "RESTORED" to its ORIGINAL CONDITION (just like the Factory Workers did in 1969) I believe that these 1969 Spiders / Duetto"s will be a "6 FIGURE" CAR AGAIN, sometime within the next 3 to 5 years.
Obviously, it"s difficult to "predict" the future of the marketplace for Classic Alfa Romeo"s, because it has a lot to do with "Brand Recognition" and Alfa Romeo"s marketing campaign for their new cars, which is mostly only "word of mouth" advertising so far.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask. .
Have a Great Day!
Regards, Tom
