One of the most spectacular looking and running cars remaining from the exciting late 60"s when FAST and BEUTIFUL cars ruled the road, this car started its life as a plain LeMans with a 350 V-8 and a 2 speed automatic. The restorer bought it from the original owner with only 68,000 miles, around 2008. This was the first (and arguably prettiest) year of the 68-72 "A" Body. This is the same body and chassis as the Chevelle Malibu, Olds Cutlass 442, and the Buick Skylark GS. The 68-69-70 models were very fast and are extremely collectible. In 71-72, we went to unleaded gas, exhaust gas recirculation, low compression ratios, and massive power reductions.
The new owner meticulously disassembeled the car, removed all mechanical components and slowly put together a fresh and VERY powerful 455 engine (originally a 77 model. There were no 455"s in 1968!), a super strong TurboHydramatic 3 speed automatic (period correct) and a racing locking differential. The cam and valve train are pretty much set up for racing. The engine sound at idle is earth shaking. The car is claimed to have about 500 horsepower and over 500 LbFt of torque. 3:73 gears give it STRONG radical off the line acceleration, but also allow modern day cruising speeds.
The body was raised above the frame far enough so that the entire frame and floor pan could be painted to as-new appearance. The suspension and steering are all modified, and the front brakes are converted to huge discs. There is no rust on this car, and there never was. The car is a California car since new. Simpson Racing bucket seats and harnesses, modern race quality instrumentation, and complete new interior finish off the flawless interior. As you can see in the photos, the paint work is spectacular. This car is a passionately brilliant red with a VERY high gloss. There"s no overspray on anything. All pieces were disassembled, all weatherstrip removed, and all interior and mechanical components were removed before the paint was applied. The front sheet metal was painted while off the car, so the cowl and inner fenders could be show quality paint finish. To keep the stock "sleeper" personality, extra HD wide factory-look 14" Rally Wheels were installed, with high performance 14" tires. It drives VERY well, as set up, but will need slicks to drag race on, if you plan to compete with it. The car is so powerful, it gets sideways under acceleration very easily. The car has a radical "big cam" idle rumble that draws a crowd. The racing exhaust is sufficiently muffled and keeps it from busting ear drums, and yet it has an almost pavement pounding rumble, that turns into a wail as you get up in RPM"s. No raspy or sharp sounds. All deep and powerful. Light weight was a focus of all design, so the air conditioning, radio and even wiper motor, the headliner and back seat cushions are removed. The dash looks totally stock, with all switches and controls, but some are ornamental only. This is a show car and a race car. It was not designed to be a daily commuter.
The car has been stored since it was completed in around 2013. I acquired it when the owner decided to sell his house in Fresno, (central) CA and build a mountain retirement cabin in Colorado. The car has been driven probably less than 50 miles since finished. It has not been raced. Stored indoors, the restoration has not deteriorated in the least. This is a "no disappointments" car. Other than a few under floor cobwebs, it"s as restored. .a time machine in a different world.
As the dollar weakens and many cars of this era are gone forever, Investment grade vehicles like this car are appreciating very fast. It comes with a box full of many tens of thousands of dollars wort of receipts, photos of the progress, and lots of other information. The car is currently plated in California and comes with a clear title. Assistance in shipping is available. Feel free to call for more information.
