1964 Maserati Mistral - Needs Restoration - No Reserve
1964 Maserati Mistral - Needs Restoration - No Reserve Click images to enlarge Description 1964 Maserati Mistral coupe. According to factory records, chassis 056 was first sold in Rome, Italy and came equipped with engine number 106.027. At the time, the car featured a very rare black-on-black combination with gray carpet. The original black color can be found on the inside upper door caps. Most Mistrals were sold in silver, red, sky blue or white. Factory black-on-black Mistrals are rare.This would be a great color combination should someone decide to restore the car to its original condition. You may decide to fully restore this car or drive and restore as you go.
The leather interior is mostly original with the exception of the center console and carpet. It has Borrani spinners and Pirelli tires mounted on 16" Dunlop wire wheels. There is no mechanical records on the car but was performed a compression test when the engine was cold, was found that all 6 cylinders were within 160psi. The oil pressure showed 95psi at start up. The car runs and drives and the transmission shifts fine in all gears, with the exception of some whining, probably mostly due to worn out transmission bearings.The gears do not grind and synchros feel very good. The brake master was recently rebuilt as well as the calipers. The engine was serviced with new fluid, an oil filter and less troublesome 45dcoe webers were also added. A new stainless steel exhaust was recently installed. Tires appear to be a few years old and will need to be replaced. The differential oil was flushed and topped. On an SCM scale of 1 to 5, anywone would rate this car a 3 minus which, by definition, is a running car in need of restoration. The car will definitely need new paint. The current paint shows bubbling in multiple spots and some corrosion can been seen in the usual places, such as the wheel arches and lower rocker corners near the gas tank. It looks like the car was painted in a one-day paint shop, meaning that the paint looks decent from 10 feet away but is quite flawed when seen up close. The interior is decent for a driver. The carpet will need to be replaced. The glass is original and is free of cracks. The original rubber is old and deteriorating, so will need to be replaced. The chassis appears very solid. There is no rust on the frame except for surface rust. The speedometer and tachometer are non-functioning.
This is a rare factory matching number car. The car was equipped with an odd serial number engine as odd numbers are normally used on spyders, but do keep in mind that this was a factory installation and the car was sold with this particular engine number when it came off the line, brand new, in Italy.
Early in-line 6 cars are becoming extremely sought-after- -hence, this car really deserves a complete restoration. The rare color combination makes it even more attractive amidst the run of the mill, standard colors. This Frua-designed car was factory built with:
1. An all-aluminum body on a tubular chassis. Even the floor pans are aluminum!
2. In-line 6, 3.7L dohc all-aluminum block and cylinder head with dual marelli ignition, bullet steel crankshaft, four bolt mains.
3. ZF transmission and girling all around disc brakes.
