Vehicle description

1964 Lincoln Continental convertible. This car came to me with a rebuild engine-as best I can tell, rebuild somewhere around 80,000 miles and since than 2,500 miles. I’ve spent seven years restoring it, but now have to move back to Germany and can’t take it with me. Most of the restoring budget has gone into internals. The engine had some minor maintenance done in 2011 (the choke rod had come loose and the ignition points and cap and rotor contacts were dirty; the choke mechanism and idle mixture had to be adjusted) and now runs very smoothly. The wiring-headlights, power windows, gauges, lighting circuits, etc. –was repaired in 2012 and has experienced only minor issues since. Sometimes a window will refuse to go up or down for a little while, but they generally come around before too long. The gauges were all restored to working condition, the suspension was repaired, the convertible top mechanism was checked out and found to be in working order, the horn was restored, the ignition bezel (unique to the 1964, it turns out) was replaced….they were even able to find and install license plate lamps. In 2014 it got all new wheels and original hubcaps. The brake system was totally re-done in 2015, including master cylinder, brake booster, wheel cylinders and brake hoses front and rear, and new brake line. All of this was done at Specialty Sports Cars in Columbus, OH, terrific mechanics who specialize in vintage cars. I spend almost $15K at this car shop and have all receipts availbe so you can exactly see what was actually done to the car. I’ve also gotten a start on restoring the appearance. The leather upholstery was shot when I got the car. On advice of the guys at Speciality, I had it replaced by Kemper’s Auto Trim. They used a thick specialty vinyl that looks and feels remarkably like leather but is even more durable and stands up to sunlight a lot better. I was a little skeptical, but the seats are terrific. Next on my list would probably some detail work, like the checkerboard pattern across the rear of the car and new paint in a couple of spots-the paint on the rear deck panel, just forward of the rear hood, has cracked a bit, and there are a couple of spots that could use some detail work. There’s no appreciable rust, on the body. The window seals are original, I think, and could stand to be replaced, and down the line new carpet wouldn’t be a bad idea. But this is all pretty minor stuff, and none of it is really urgent. In short, this is already a great driver’s car, and it’s not too far from being fully restored. It’s an absolute joy to drive down the street, especially with all of the waves and thumbs-up gestures that you get along the way. I’ve driven a fair number of cars over the last years and I can honestly say that there is nothing else like one of these old Lincolns-the ride is smooth as silk, the design is razor-sharp, and the engine’s roar is straight out of old Detroit. It’s pure class. The car is located in Houston, TX
