Vehicle description
This December 1955 VW beetle convertible is truly a rare find in this condition. I have had a passion for and owned early VW"s for 40 years, especially convertibles. This is the most solid, original, un-cut, tight, early convertible I have ever had. Having said this please keep in mind this is a 62 year old vehicle, it is not perfect! The car has all original metal. Original pans and reinforcement rails. Correct: Interior dome light and under dash 3 way switch, original mirror and visors, correct and original front and rear aprons, "VW" stamped bumper brackets, headlight bucket wire tubes, correct horn, original floor pans with proper floor mat hold down "buttons", the originality and fantastic condition of the car can not be over stated. This was a California car, preserved in the late 80"s and then stored. While not numbers matching, the 8/"57 36hp purrs and drives beautifully and was recently tuned by an air-cooled mechanic. Yes the choke works, as do all the 6V electrics (horn works irregularly, probably a ground). It does have an early dehne fuel gauge but no sending unit in tank. The transmission operates properly, as well as the heat control. My experience is that many of the original California cars have carbon blocked engine manifolds as well as missing or inoperable heat exchangers, in CA climate it goes unnoticed, but both of these areas are perfect on this oval era convertible. While she is probably not the original colors, there is no area on the car that was not repainted. Whoever did the car years ago did a nice thorough job although the paint is not "show quality". I have the birth certificate from the Siftung Museum in Germany and it says "color not mentioned". What I can tell you is the paint is an emerald green metallic. The paint is showing it"s age in areas, has received some small touch ups, but overall still shines and is quite the attention grabber. The interior is white with green piping and done beautifully. She has won trophies at several VW shows. The 5.60x15 bias ply wide whites have slight cracking but otherwise almost no wear. Rims are correct two toned with convertible only trim rings. The spare is a brand new coker. The chrome is very nice, all the window chrome is nearly perfect and yes the windows all roll up and down perfectly and it seals tightly as it would have when new. The top is white vinyl with all the appropriate bright trimmings. There is one repairable small tear on the top above the drivers vent wing. The headliner is tan cloth and is in pristine condition. All top latches including hold down latches when top is opened are in place and correct. Trunk area is clean un-hit and tidy. These early convertibles are becoming increasingly difficult to find in this condition. To the unaware bidders there have been other early VW"s on this site with several missing or incorrect parts such as incorrect early convertible rear window, dome light, flip mirror, deck lid, etc. This car has ALL the correct and original hard to find bits and pieces and runs and drives as it should. I will personally clean and detail the car before delivery. Reserve is set appropriately, I have a "55 "vert that will be listed separately in the near future. Car is for sale locally and may be withdrawn at any time. Thanks for looking and good luck!
