Vehicle description
This 1951 Oldsmobile Super 88 is a rare find in this condition! My dad purchased this vehicle in 2009 because it is the exact year, make, and model that he drove as his first car when he was 16. It gave him lots of joy when he had it, and it can bring you joy, too. Body is in excellent shape with minimal surface rust in undercarriage. Paint and bumper chrome has minimal dings and scratches. No major exterior cosmetic defects otherwise. Vehicle has always been garage kept. In terior is in good shape. Seats are clean. Upholstery is in good shape but has a stain on it. We suspect it was from past leaks that have been fixed, but we"ve never had this vehicle leak on us, and have driven it through rain (wipers function adequately). Engine runs strong when it starts, but it is not "turn-key" at present. Carburetor is finicky and most likely needs to be rebuilt if it can"t be adjusted (rich/lean balance is off). Vehicle has been sitting since March of this year (2019). It belonged to my father, but he passed away in April. I recommend getting the gas siphoned out and replaced with fresh gas before attempting to start it. It cannot handle ethanol fuel without additives. Buyer will need to have the vehicle towed and will be responsible for making such arrangements. Vehicle came with an aftermarket MP3-CD player (AUX port capable [no BlueTooth]) installed under the steering column as to not interfere with the vintage craftsmanship. Also came with an aftermarket A/C & heater, which blows ice cold on these hot Houston summer days, and keeps you warm in the winter. Dad had the brakes and steering modified to make it easier to drive: he had the brakes professionally upgraded to power anti-lock brakes, and power steering was professionally added, both by a classic car restoration shop, and both work per specifications flawlessly; it is definitely easier to steer and stop this beast. Also installed (by the same professional shop) is a power regulator that hooks directly to the battery via an extension cord to a standard wall outlet. This keeps the vehicle battery charged. It"s purpose is to maintain the voltage, not to charge the battery; using this device to charge the battery will not work. Vehicle has been sitting, as mentioned earlier, since March, and the interior lights are fully illuminated at present when you open the door. The following have been replaced: starter, fuel filter, alternator, belts, a/c compressor, windshield & driver"s side window (shop"s fault!), fuel tank, 4 new tires, and the carburetor has been rebuilt once before. Wiring has some quirks: all headlights and taillights work, but when you make a left turn signal, the right arrow on your instrument panel flashes; the outside left signal lights are blinking though, and vice versa for right turn signal. The speedometer and odometer haven"t worked since we got the vehicle in 2009. Gas gauge isn"t reliable, but is a float style mechanical gauge that works when it isn"t stuck somewhere in the tank. Horn used to work in recent years, but no longer makes sound. Manual clock on steering wheel works, and is automatically wound up by steering wheel movement. Setting the time on it is fruitless unless you drive it every day. Selling because I don"t have the time to dedicate to it like my father did; "Oscar" made him very happy, and will make someone very proud to own this classic. Vehicle will not come with the vintage plates that are on it right now. I want to keep those for sentimental reasons. If you"re in Texas. if you find vintage plates for 1951, you can purchase them and apply them to this vehicle at the courthouse when you go register the title. I can"t speak for other states.
